On the 14th of December, 2019, Optigreen Foundation in collaboration with Christ Apostolic Church Somolu Olaleye District Coordinating Council (DCC) headquarters and Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) set out on a cleaning mission tagged- ”LET’S CLEAN UP SOMOLU.”
The sanitation exercise covered more than six (6) streets including Oguntolu Street, Agunbiade Street, Olaleye Street, Bolaji Street, Oluwasago Street, amongst others. Detailed attention was given to the clearing of PET bottles and plastic bags from the drainage systems and bagging them appropriately.
These communities were also sensitized about indiscriminate disposal of waste; need to support the government and PSP operators; proper sorting of waste, proper bagging of waste especially PET bottles and a plastic bag which takes a long time to disintegrate; the importance of a clean drainage system, etc. The Somolu Local Government Chairman, Hon AbdulHamed Salawu Dullar and members of his executive actively gave their support by showing up to participate in the clean-up.
The sensitization ran concurrently with the cleanup, as a group of volunteers was dedicated to sharing sensitization fliers and signing up greenness ambassadors, who are expected to engage in environmentally sustainable practices and teach others to do the same.
The exercise went as planned, and it is expected to foster better environmental practice by the residents of Somolu local government.
